Insurance Division offers Reno fire victims assistance

The Nevada Division of Insurance is offering Reno fire victims help with their insurance claims.

Insurance Commissioner Scott Kipper said hazards generally covered by a home or renter's policy include fire, wind, smoke damage or loss of use.

He said residents should review their policy and immediately contact their agent to discuss their claim.

Policies typically also require that the resident prevent further damage or theft.

He said they should take pictures of any damage and remove undamaged personal property if the home can't be secured.

But he cautioned residents not to dispose of any property until after an insurance adjuster has reviewed it.

Kipper said to keep records of all expenses including other lodging since policies generally cover expenses including meals, rent and transportation.

Finally, he said don't feel rushed or pushed to agree to a settlement. Try to resolve any disagreements but if you can't, he said contact the insurance division.

Officials also warned to look out for scam artists trying to take advantage. Check licensing of any contractors and get references and always get a written estimate. Don't sign any contract before the insurance adjuster examines any damage and don't pay any contractor the full amount up front. Make a down payment when the contract is signed with the remainder owed when the work is complete.
