The National Honor Society chapter of Carson High held its induction ceremony on Sept. 27. Sixty-three new members were inducted increasing the chapter membership to 166 members.
Secretary of State Ross Miller was the keynote speaker and spoke about civic duty and the importance of actively participating in the political process.
In other NHS news, NHS is hosting a blood drive 7:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Oct. 13 in the small gym. Sign- ups are available bloodhero.com.
Donors should use the sponsor code "Senators." Snacks and free T-shirt will be provided. A free cholesterol test is available with each donation. Please sign up and support this worthy cause.
THEATER PERFORMANCE
Carson Performing Arts presents "Monday Night Live" 7 p.m. Oct. 10 at the Carson City Community Center. A celebration of the start of Homecoming festivities, this 90-minute sketch comedy show is patterned off the famous "Saturday Night Live" and features cameo performances by teachers as well as musical guest star, Donkey Punch.
Homecoming candidates will be introduced on this night as well as revealing dress up days and parodies of CHS life. The cost is $5 at the door.

NEW ATHLETIC
SPECTATOR POLICY
Students from the middle schools and elementary schools from Carson City School District are a welcome addition to the CHS athletic activities if they are there to support those athletes.
However, it has become apparent that these activities have become social gatherings for these students and not support for athletics. With increased demands for security measures, we need to take steps to ensure the safety and enjoyment of those who are attending to support our teams.
It has become the norm for parents to drop students off leaving them unsupervised. It is impossible to provide supervision for both high school and middle school and younger students. For this reason CHS will be immediately implementing the following guidelines for CHS athletic activities: Any eighth-grade student or younger must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. This means the parent or guardian must enter with the student and be present throughout the event.
HOSA WANTS OLD PHONES
Carson Health Occupational Students of America (HOSA) is collecting used cell phones for a good cause. Collection boxes are located at: Carson City Aquatic Facility, The AT&T store and Walmart (south location). All phones are wiped clean and recycled to people in need. WASHINGTON, D.C. INFO NIGHT
For those CHS students and parents interested in attending the Inauguration of the 45th President of the United States in Washington, D.C. in January of 2013, there is a student-parent information night at 6:30 p.m. Tuesday in the high school library. Registration deadline for the trip is Oct. 18.

CHS GOING GREEN
The Carson City Greenhouse Project continues to take shape behind Carson High School.
On Sept. 17, a few CHS staff members joined volunteers to help construct the pathway in the outdoor portion of the garden. The area will include planter boxes along a winding path that leads to the greenhouse. Basic construction of the greenhouse is now complete and the restrooms will be finished in the next few weeks.
Power is to be provided by an array of solar panels that will soon be installed. Once this work is finished and the planter boxes are in place, the mechanical equipment will be installed in the greenhouse. Meanwhile, teacher Steve Dilley's horticultural and agricultural science students are spending time in the classroom, preparing to get their hands dirty and start growing.
As stated in the business plan on the project website (www.carsoncitygreenhouse.org), "students will cultivate and distribute vegetables for school culinary classes and local food banks and will produce flower baskets for the downtown Carson City corridor." Also, Karen Bianchi's science class is going to be working in the greenhouse.
The high school has started a Future Farmers of America (FFA) chapter which will be named the Capitol FFA Chapter as a result of the implementation of the Plant and Ag Science class.
FFA is a national organization for students enrolled in Agriculture classes and provides students with leadership skills.

FORMER CHS STUDENTS
HONORED BY UNR
The University of Nevada, Reno has announced that 116 students have been accepted into their highly selective Honors Program this fall. These students are from all over the United States and we are proud to say that five of them are graduates of Carson High School.
The five students are Emily Cook, Connie Duong, Alexis Fallon, Sierra Jiron and Joseph Ward. These students were chosen based on high academic achievement, outstanding leadership ability, and demonstrating an interest in academic and career goals.
They will undertake a challenging curriculum of honors courses while participating in academic, professional, and social opportunities and completing an honors undergraduate thesis.

SENIOR SPOTLIGHT
This week's senior spotlight is on Elizabeth Matley. Elizabeth has a weighted grade-point average of 4.7. Eliza is a student athlete who has been participating in basketball and soccer for most of her life.
Her true passion is with basketball. Due to her outstanding grade-point average she is a member of the National Honors Society.
Eliza has been member of HOSA (Health Occupational Students of America) for the last two years.
She said the club has been beneficial in her decision to go into the field of medicine. Eliza is planning on going to school on a basketball scholarship.
She has had several offers, but has not yet decided on where she would like to go. Eliza wants to study pre-med, with a minor in Spanish.
She would like to study abroad, specifically Spain. Carson High is proud of Eliza and her contributions and dedication to our school.
