Carson felon jailed in Washoe County

A Carson City man was jailed in Washoe County on Sunday after a state trooper stopped him for failing to dim his headlights and found drugs and a loaded weapon on him, according to an official.

James Wise, 25, was booked into the Washoe County Jail on suspicion of failure to dim his headlights, a seat belt violation, driving without a valid driver's license, delaying/lying to a peace officer, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of less than an ounce of marijuana, possession of methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm, said Trooper Chuck Allen of the Nevada Highway Patrol.

A trooper stopped Wise about 5:52 a.m. Sunday after he failed to dim his high beams, Allen said. Wise stopped his vehicle in a driveway at a residence on Plumb Lane. According to Allen, Wise told the trooper that he lived at the home, but shortly thereafter the resident came out and said Wise did not live there.

"A records check of Mr. Wise's driver's license status indicated that his license was not valid and he was also registered as an ex-felon. Mr. Wise was placed under arrest for the traffic violations and for lying to or obstructing a police officer," said Allen in a press release.

He said the trooper searched Wise's car and found marijuana, methamphetamine, two hypodermic needles and other drug paraphernalia and a loaded semi-automatic handgun.

Bail was set at $7,000.

In 2006, when Wise was 20 years old, a Carson City judge sentenced him to one to six years months in prison for nearly running over a deputy who had been called to a dispute. At the time of sentencing, Judge Bill Maddox warned Wise to change his ways.

"You really need to sit down and think of what you've done with your life. You've already got two felonies now," said Maddox. "The state's going to get tired of fooling with you and say, 'Hey, this guy's a habitual criminal,' and put you in jail for the rest of your life."
