Obituary: Deacon Wendell Schumacher

Deacon Wendell Schumacher, 87, a resident of Carson City for 70 years, was born October 12, 1923 in Fairfield Township, Iowa and passed away August 28, 2011 in Carson City, Nevada. He was a Navy Veteran of WWII, serving aboard the USS Cockrill. He was ordained as a Deacon in 1985 at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. He lectored at daily mass, was actively involved in a number of Catholic services, and trained others to follow in his ministries. Wendell always said that becoming a Deacon was one of the best decisions of his life.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Ann Schumacher on October 26, 2006. Wendell is survived by his stepson, Russ Sheltra and wife, Margo of Reno, NV; grandchildren, Ryan Sheltra, Nicole Sheltra Knapp, Holly Sheltra, and Eden Sheltra; 8 great grandchildren; sisters, Phyllis of Lubbock, TX and Shirley of Maquoketa, IA; and niece, Linda Gotelli of Carson City, NV.

A funeral mass will be celebrated on Tuesday, September 6, 2011 at 9:30 AM at St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Church. Inurnment will be in Walton's Carson Gardens Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to Walton's Chapel of the Valley, Carson City. 775-882-4965
