With the school year just under way, Carson High School is honored to have a responsible group of young adults representing the student body.

Student body officers for the 2011-12 school year at CHS are Tim Grunert, president; Camilla Dudley, vice president; Alyson Christi, secretary; Nate Brown, treasurer; and James Levins, public relations officer.

Exchange students expand Carson students' global perspective

CHS is excited to welcome a group of exchange students from around the world. Aske Bruun Schmidt is here from Denmark, Katarzyna Centkowska is from Poland, Ana Paola Cervera Rosado is from Mexico, Manon Anne Marie Hustinx is from Belgium, and Andrea Muzio is from Italy.

Speaking from a personal viewpoint, having these students in our classrooms allows for great conversations about the world from a global perspective.

Wellness Council receives national recognition

Congratulations to the Wellness Council at CHS. The school earned a bronze-level National Recognition Award in June from the Alliance for a Healthier Generation at the Alliance's Healthy Schools Program Forum in Little Rock, Ark., for CHS's efforts to build a healthy campus. The forum proved to be a great event.

Erin Been, a member of the CHS council, received the award on behalf of CHS.  She met 274 other nationally recognized schools from around the country. She also had the opportunity to hear some great speakers, including former President Bill Clinton.

The CHS Wellness Council's success in getting students and staff to eat more nutritious foods and engage in more physical activity is thanks to the commitment of our entire school community.

The council is excited to expand its work to ensure that a strong culture of health and wellness is part of the daily school experience.

To learn more about its work to build a healthy campus and the efforts of other recognized schools, check out the Alliance's website, healthiergeneration.org/.

Other members of the council include CHS staff members Penny Reynolds, Johnny Lang, Sharon Miller, Larry Hawkins, Michelle Lewis, Sheila Story, Erin Been, and student liaisons Savannah Law and Dylan Haycock.

Speech and debate class develops critical skills

CHS is once again offering a speech and debate class taught by Patrick Mobley. This class offers students a wide variety of ways to improve their speaking and critical-thinking skills.

Students will be exposed to many forms of verbal communication including storytelling, impromptu speaking, dramatic and humorous interpretation, and extemporaneous speaking.

The class will also focus on develop students' ability to analyze multiple sides of important current events through the use of Congressional, Public Forum, and Lincoln Douglas debates.

Students will develop their ability to conduct effective research, write persuasively and speak confidently in front of an audience.

The class is aligned with the National Forensic League and will compete in speaking competitions throughout the year to give students a chance to put their learning into practice.
