Straw hats can be seen on the streets in unusual numbers for this season of the year, and in a number of instances linen dusters have taken the place of overcoats. There is no improbability, though that the "pressers of the season" will fall back on winter apparel before summer sets in.

A reduction order went into effect yesterday when Governor Oddie did not replace the assistant state engineer, who left earlier in the season. Other men are to be sent out to work on water rights issues. State engineer Kearney has his hands full.

70 YEARS AGO

The Ormsby rationing board met this week. Higher quotas are in line for the month. The application for Louise Walters for a tire to carry mail was approved.

50 YEARS AGO

The NASA spacemobile will visit Nevada this week. The goal of the exhibit will help children and adults understand America's accomplishments and future role in space exploration.

JC Penney celebrates 90 years in Carson City with a special sale.-

The Gold Hill Hotel presents the Way Off Broadway Theater Comstock-Style. Many of the actors are from the area. Some even work at the hotel.

• Trent Dolan is the son of Bill Dolan, who wrote this column for the Nevada Appeal from 1947 until his death in 2006.
