Monarch moves forward with acquisition

Monarch Casino & Resort of Reno won approval last week from Colorado authorities to proceed with its planned acquisition of casino in Black Hawk, Colo.

In nearly the same breath, the company said business at its Atlantis Casino Resort Spa held up fairly well even without the Safari Club International convention in the first quarter.

The publicly held company earned $1.6 million on revenues of $34.6 million in the first quarter. This compares with earnings of $1.5 million on revenues of $33.3 million a year earlier.

A major drag on the quarter's results came from the loss of the Safari Club convention to Las Vegas this year. That resulted in a hit of more than 12 percent to hotel revenues at the Atlantis during the quarter.

Monarch said it expects to close on its purchase of Rivera Black Hawk Casino in Colorado by the end of this month.
