Senator Square: Fundraisers kicking off at Carson High School

Once again, Warren Miller raises the bar with “Flow State,” offering filmgoers a magnitude of ski and snowboard action that can’t be matched anywhere else.Warren Miller’s “Flow State” will show at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Dec. 7 to benefit the Carson High Ski Team.Warren Miller films mark the official start of winter for sports enthusiasts everywhere. Warren Miller premieres are an experience, a party and a phenomenon not to be missed —as film attendees have a chance to win exciting prizes, meet a world-class athlete and get access to exclusive, high-value savings from film tour partners.Tickets are available at Carson High School Athletic Office now for $10 or $12 at the door.FUNDRAISER FOR SPRING BALLCarson High School will be working in conjunction with Western Nevada College to help raise money for the college and high school baseball and softball teams. The fundraiser is a four-course meal, with silent and regular auction for prizes.The guest speaker at the dinner will be former Carson High School baseball player Matt Williams, who went on to play professionally. The dinner is 6 p.m. Jan. 24 at the downtown Reno Ballroom. Tickets are $100, and $35 of the tickets goes toward the high school programs. Tables of 10 can be purchased for $850. This is a great opportunity for locals to support both the college and the high school with the same event. All you have to do is contact one of the high school coaches so that your ticket gets divided to both schools.STUDENT COUNCIL REPORTThis past week another club has joined Carson High. The Japanese Culture Club was proposed and approved on Wednesday at the Student Council meeting. This club is a place where students who enjoy anime, a Japanese form of cartoons, can come together every other week on Mondays and Friday.Carson High School Student Council, FBLA, and many other organizations and community members, are going to be helping out at Bordewich Bray 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 8 to build a new playground.This playground is coming from the Let Them Be Kids Organization, which is building new playgrounds for kids all across the nation to help create a safe environment for kids to play. (Report submitted by Lydia Lopez, student council public relations officer.)CHOIR DEPARTMENT NEWSThe Carson High School Choral Department will be well represented in this year’s Northern Zone Nevada Music Educators Association High School Honor Choir. Thirty-four students from CHS choral and musical theater ensembles were selected by audition for this honor group. Each of the six choral ensembles has at least one member representing them in the Honor Choir.Two students received the special recognition of having the highest and second highest scores in their sections and will serve as section leaders. Tenor Section Leader for the ensemble will be Henry Wilson and Alto Assistant Section Leader will be Courtney Baxter. The ensemble will perform Feb. 20 at Churchill County High School. Carson High School members of the Honor Choir are: Jocelyn Arevalo, Emma Baglin, Ali Barchus, Summer Barth, Courtney Baxter, Anastasia Bevins, Destanee Cachucha, Kati Ceragioli, Katasha DeGraw, Brandon Dodge, Jessica Dodge, Cara DuMonte, Heather Evans, Bella Favero, Stephanie Gansberg, Alexa Garcia, Ivan Gates, Jordan Geist, Nathan Hazard, Jennifer Huckabay, Michael Irvin, Sharon Knight, Taylor Koop, Lance Logan, DJ Luster, Chrislyn Lyons, Liza Mathews, Shaylee Nystrom, Mikaila Phillips, Victor Quispe, Traci Thornton, Jesse Toral, Tyler Torres, and Henry Wilson.All of the ensembles in the choral department will be performing holiday concerts during the week before winter break. These performances take place at the Carson City Community Center at 7 p.m. Admission for these concerts is a suggested donation of $2 per person or two cans of food. Each year the collected canned goods are donated to the Ron Wood Family Resource Center. The Musical Theater Concert will be Dec. 18 and the Choral Ensemble Concert on Dec. 19.The Concert Choir and Chamber Choir are undertaking a number of fundraisers this year in order to travel to a Heritage Performance Program Choral Festival.This year the CHS Choral Department will revive the Madrigal Dinner tradition. On Feb. 14, in honor of Valentine’s Day, we will be presenting a Royal Dinner complete with ensemble performances and a Medieval Style Turkey Leg Dinner prepared by the CHS Culinary Arts. The dinner and show be 5:30 p.m. in Senator Square. Tickets are available through the choral department for $15 each if purchased before February 1. After Feb. 1, all tickets will be $20 whether purchased ahead of time or at the door. Limited seating is available for our one show so be sure to purchase your tickets early!Beginning Monday, Carson Senator Sunglasses will be available for purchase. The sunglasses are Royal Blue and White with the Senator Man Mascot and are available in the classic 50s style or a more contemporary style as well. They are $10 each and will be available through the choral department and at home sports events.In addition to sunglasses sales and the Madrigal Dinner, program ads may be purchased for each of concerts throughout the year. (Choir report submitted by Andy Sonnemaker)SENIOR SPOTLIGHTCHS is proud to spotlight senior Matthew DeMar, who has a weighted grade-point average of 4.04. Matthew participates in Naval Junior ROTC, competing on its rifle team, academic team, orienteering team. He also plays varsity football and is a member of National Honor Society.He is the commanding officer in NJROTC, as well as the executive officer of the rifle team. He was awarded the scholar athlete award in football, has earned several academic letters, and has lettered in both varsity rifle team and football.Not only does Matthew participate in extracurricular activities at CHS, but he also volunteers in his community through NJROTC and the CHS Football Junior Senator Program. He has been awarded numerous awards through NJROTC, some of the most noteworthy being the Theodore Roosevelt Youth Medal Award, the Military Order of the Purple Heart and the Ancient and Accepted Scottish Rite of Free Masonry Southern Jurisdiction Recognizing Scholastic Excellence and Demonstrated Americanism.Matthew plans to major in aeronautical engineering, and has applied to many schools, including the U.S. Naval Academy, the U.S. Air Force Academy, the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, and Purdue. He has been awarded the Naval ROTC Scholarship, which provides a full-ride scholarship at any college or university with a Naval ROTC program.
