‘Always Lost’ Touring Michigan, Wisconsin

Western Nevada College’s literary and photographic tribute to Iraqi and Afghanistan war casualties, “Always Lost: A Meditation on War,” continues its national tour this winter. The compelling and moving exhibit is booked for college and university exhibitions in the Midwest deep into the spring of next year.“Always Lost” was conceptualized in the fall of 2008 by two faculty members and their students. It features prose and poems from Professor Emeritus Marilee Swirczek’s creative writing classes, along with Pulitzer Prize-winning photographs of the conflicts, offered for use by the Dallas Morning News.It is highlighted by the Wall of the Dead, which displays the photographs and names of the thousands of U.S. war casualties in Iraq and Afghanistan since Sept. 11, 2001. The project team is dedicated to continually updating the Wall of the Dead to honor those who have died fighting for our country, as well as the men and women who were able to return home.The exhibit appeared at Michigan Technological University in Houghton, Mich., through Friday. From there, it will travel to Mount Mary College in Milwaukee from Jan. 13-Feb. 16, and then Wisconsin-Stevens Point for a March 17-April 26 exhibition.Register Now for Spring SemesterSpring registration continues for the semester beginning Jan. 22. The Carson City campus will offer limited services Dec. 24-31. All campuses will be closed on Christmas and New Year’s Day.The Douglas campus will be closed Dec. 24-Jan. 1. The Fallon campus will be closed Dec. 24-28. The campus will also be closed on Jan. 1.Normal hours and services resume Jan. 2, at all campuses. The college bookstore, in the Aspen Building, has some great gift ideas. Shoppers can show their Wildcats pride with the sweatshirts, sweatpants and T-shirts that have just arrived.There are a variety of Wildcats mugs, water bottles and travel cups that make great stocking stuffers. New offerings this year are gift cards, including iTunes, Chili’s and Macaroni Grill. For the youngest on the list, there are also creative children’s books.The bookstore will be open 10 a.m.-5 p.m. Monday through Thursday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 21.Nursing Students Provide Gifts to Needy ChildrenNursing students have partnered with the Carson City Salvation Army to provide 100 Christmas gifts to area children in need. Students set up an Angel Tree in the Allied Health office. Students and faculty members chose gift tags for presents they then purchased and returned this week.Students Help Fellow StudentsThe Associated Students of Western Nevada College helped make the holidays brighter for more than 50 fellow students and their families. Student body leaders set up a Giving Tree at both the Carson City and Fallon campuses to help students who are in need this year. Students, faculty and staff purchased gifts, and this week, along with studying for finals, ASWN student leaders wrapped the gifts for delivery.Student body Sen. Jacob Counsil said the campaign was a big success. “It was great. We actually collected more than we expected we would,” he said.
