The head of the DMV says the Legislative Commission vote Wednesday makes Nevada the first state in the nation to allow the operation of driverless vehicles on the highways.
"Nevada is the first state to embrace what is surely the future of automobiles," said Bruce Breslow. "These regulations establish requirements that companies must meet to test their vehicles on Nevada's public roadways as well as requirements for residents to legally operate them in the future."
The program was created in partnership with Google as well as automakers, insurance companies and law enforcement.
Breslow said the department is now working on licensing procedures for companies that will test self-driving vehicles in Nevada.
He said other drivers will be able to identify test vehicles by their red license plates.
He said when the technology is ready for general use by the public, the license plates will be green.
