Fundraiser planned for Carson bar and grill owner Kim Dandos

Kim Dandos, owner of The Spoke Bar & Grill, has hosted countless fundraisers for people over the years. Now she's the one who needs help.

Diagnosed with Leukemia in 2009, she underwent chemotherapy and radiation but is now in need of a bone marrow transplant.

"Every time someone calls her for a fundraiser, she puts it on," said Desiree Gates, an employee at The Spoke. "That's why we're putting this on for her."

The benefit will begin at noon March 3 at The Spoke. It will feature a $5 buffet and raffle drawings.

Former Oakland Raiders Pro Bowler Otis Sistrunk, part of the team that won Super Bowl XI, also will be there with autographed memorabilia.

All proceeds will go to cover expenses related to the transplant, scheduled for the end of March, including the cost of a caregiver required to remain with her throughout her hospital stay.

Gates said Dandos will likely be hospitalized for about three months.

Before owning the bar, Dandos ran a bike business and then a car lot across from Mills Park for several years.

"She's been a huge part of this community," Gates said. "She's wonderful. Anytime someone needs something, she's the one to do it. She never asks for anything in return."

During Dandos' absence, Gates and other employees will keep the business running.

"Kim has been there for a lot of us in times of need," Gates said. "Now, it is our time to be there for her."
