Western Nevada College has launched a new initiative, Project Graduate, which will encourage and assist students in pursuit of a college degree, certificate, or university transfer. The program formalizes the enrollment process and helps students progress more efficiently and effectively toward a degree or certificate.
"Project Graduate is designed to help our degree-seeking students get what they came for - a college certificate or degree. We will provide the essentials that will allow students to start college on the right track, right from the start," said John Kinkella, WNC dean of student services.
Project Graduate set standards and expectations for any new degree-seeking student who plans to attend WNC this summer or fall. To be accepted, new students will be required to have a high school diploma or GED certificate.
Students that do not meet the admissions criteria may take placement tests to determine if they meet the minimum requirements for enrollment in English and Math, take the GED exam, or submit official college transcripts with record of completion of college level English, math or other general education courses.
Non-degree seeking students will be able to enroll in up to six units per semester.
Upon admission, degree-seeking students will be required to attend an orientation, take placement tests and meet with a counselor before registering for classes. With summer registration starting Monday, April 9, and fall registration beginning Monday, April 23, new students are encouraged to begin the application for admission process early.
"The admission process and pre-registration actions of Project Graduate require time and planning," said Kinkella, and new students will not be able to register for classes without completing these items.
Graduating high school students will be helped with the new admission process through WNC's Bridge to Success outreach program, which walks area high school students through the transition to college. WNC advisers and student ambassadors will spend the spring in the local high schools, preparing graduating seniors to attend Western.

Sponsorships, teams forming for golf classic
Supporting Western Nevada College is as simple and enjoyable as participating in an 18-hole golf tournament. The WNC Foundation is seeking sponsors and players for its 14th annual Golf Classic on Monday, June 25, at Thunder Canyon Country Club. Tournament proceeds benefit WNC programs and students.
Community businesses and organizations can offer their support through various sponsorship opportunities, including the tournament title sponsorship for $10,000. This includes the prestige of a company name being associated with the tournament, an event banner, program recognition, four tee signs and 12 tournament participants. Other sponsorships are available for the golfers' barbecue ($3,000); event awards, on-course refreshments and player tee prizes with logo ($1,500 each); and tee signs on the course ($250 each). Eighteen business sponsorship packages are also available for $700 each, which includes a team of four and one tee sign with company name.
Entry fees for players are $500 per four-person team or $125 per individual, and includes a round of golf with cart, light breakfast, tee prizes, barbecue and awards ceremony, team photos, margarita hole, hole-in-one prizes and more.

Artist to offer printmaking workshop March 9
Sarah Whorf, whose exhibit "Desire and The Landscape" is now showing at the WNC Main Gallery, will offer a linoleum block printmaking workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Friday, March 9. The workshop is open to the public. Cost is $25, and includes all materials. For information or registration, call 445-4294.
Public reception set for exhibiting artists
The public is invited to meet the college's exhibiting artists during a free reception from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Thursday, March 8, at the WNC Galleries. Featured artists include printmaker Sarah Whorf, mixed-media artist Susan Kotler, and literary contributors from Lone Mountain Writers, Ash Canyon Poets and WNC creative writing classes. The WNC Galleries are in the Bristlecone Building at the Carson City campus.
