Laurel Fire is now 100 percent contained

The Laurel Fire, which started Friday afternoon on the eastside of Carson City, was declared 100 percent contained late Saturday afternoon.

Mindy Stevenson, manager of the Sierra Front Interagency Dispatch Center, said the size of the blaze reached 318 acres.

The fire was merely smoldering as winds calmed down and mop-up operations continued throughout the day Saturday.

The fire in the Pinon Hills, which started shortly before 1 p.m., was fanned by wind gusts of 50 to 60 mph throughout the day Friday and into the early evening. At one point, it had been estimated at nearly 400 acres.

Winds began blowing in an easterly direction and shifted the flames away from the 20 homes that were initially threatened.

After starting at about 12:45 p.m., the fire spread rapidly into Brunswick Canyon in the dry pinon-juniper, sagebrush and cheatgrass area west of Deer Run Road.

Responding agencies were the Carson City District Bureau of Land Management, Carson Fire Department and Nevada Division of Forestry.

The fire was expected to be unstaffed Saturday night, but resources were to be back on the scene this morning, Stevenson said.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation, she said.
