Cheers & Kudos

Thanks to those who made Adopt-A-Senior Program a success

With the assistance of a generous and caring community, the Carson City Senior Citizens Center was able to bring Christmas cheer of gifts and food to more than 250 homebound seniors this holiday season.

The Adopt-A-Senior Program is designed to have donations made to benefit homebound seniors struggling to care for themselves, who are in financial distress, or are without family or friends in the area.

We experienced a tremendous outpouring of generosity and kindness; which is even more impressive given the challenging economic times in which we live.

Donors included: Aging and Disability Services, Anna Winston, Beta Sigma Phi Sorority, Bethany Lutheran Church, Coldwell Banker Best Sellers, Carrie with Big O Tires, Carson City Host Lions, Carson City Raiders Booster Club, Carson Tahoe Cancer Center, Christine Laird, Claire Clift, Dawn Beck, Debbie Dodds, Donis Rodarte, Elaine and c-workers with the Nevada Legislature, EPS West, and the Gold Dust West Youth Bowling Program.

Other donors were Gretchen Ellis, Joey Bottino, Karen Crandall, Karen Michael w/ the State of Nevada Secretary of State, Kirsten Sherve and Nevada Emergency Management, Kiwanis Club of the Sierra, Marla Schroeder, Marie Borgo, Mary Brown, the Morway family (Eric, Christina, Asa, Leif and Fletcher), Nevada Association of Porcelain Artists, Nevada Legal Services, and the Ormsby Sportsman Association.

Also to be mentioned are Pat May and the State Insurance Division, Penny Pierce, Renate Daniels, Rhonda the Craft Lady, Sally Zola, North Carson Save Mart, Sophia Bottino, Soroptimist International of Carson City, Susan Maki of Shear Designs and all those whose contributions I may have forgotten to mention.

Thanks to the kindness of community-minded businesses and individuals, our homebound seniors Christmas program was a great success. A greater benefit was the smile we received from each recipient, who knew someone cared, and was thinking about them during the holiday season.

We are very fortunate to have such a wonderful community like Carson City to live in.

Douglas Co. Christmas bag program a success

The Young At Heart Senior Citizens Club would like to express its gratitude to those individuals and organizations that assisted in and contributed to the Christmas gift bag program for Douglas County homebound seniors and other needy senior citizens.

This year, we distributed 140 large shopping bags full of gifts and canned hams. The recipients of these gifts were thrilled to receive these bags of presents In some cases, they were the only gifts which they would be given during the holiday season.

Special recognition should be given to Annette Muller of Young At Heart who coordinated this project, the parishioners of Saint Gall Catholic Church who provided the largest contribution, and the Carson Valley Girl Scouts who made Christmas cards for both the gift bag recipients and the Douglas County Senior Center attendees.

Also to be recognized are Scolari's Food and Drug Company, which once again provided all of the bags, the Record-Courier and Nevada Appeal, which publicized this project, and the Douglas High School Key Club and DART, which participated in the distribution of the bags.

We had many other contributors too numerous to identify here, but we would like to express our appreciation to all of them for making this a very successful humanitarian holiday program.

Raiders Booster Club thanks supporters

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club would like to thank the following individuals and organizations for their help in supporting our annual Christmas Commitment to Home Bound Seniors:

Shawn Hague-Chili's Grill & Bar, Linda Hunt-Harrah's & Harveys Casinos, Ashlea Bryant & Dayna Phelan-Walmart, Barbara Sullivan-Costco, Jeanise Parker-Pioneer Crossing Casino, Jennifer Thomas-Keva Juice, Dayton Valley Country Club, Susan Cox, Robert & Betty Clements, Don & Joan Drake, Louis & Barbara Larson, Ray & Dianne Masayko and Tommy Kuracina.

Due to their generosity and the giving spirit of our club's members, we were able to adopt 15 home bound seniors this year and provide them with gifts from their modest wish lists plus some extra surprises. It was wonderful to see the seniors' faces light up when our elves delivered their wrapped gifts and visited with them.

Salvation Army thankful of support from community

I am writing to thank the Carson City community for their support of The Salvation Army as we strive to serve the needy over the holidays this year.

Because of the faithful support of Mike's Pharmacy and KOH AM 780 we received 1,099 turkeys from the community and shared them with other family service agencies in Carson City, Tahoe, Douglas County, China Spring and Washoe. Along with those turkeys The Salvation Army gave out the fixings for a warm Thanksgiving meal for close to 300 families.

For Christmas, we gave out gifts to 1,000-plus children and 300-plus elderly here in the community and a complete Christmas meal with either a ham or a turkey to more than 300 families. Each child received at least two gifts and several stocking stuffers. This was all made possible by the support of the community placing food in our food barrels, donating toys, sending in checks, or putting a little extra change into one of our red kettles.

I want the community to know that we appreciate all that you have done to make this holiday season a success. The Salvation Army is here in Carson City on a mission to serve the community's needs in the name of Jesus, and call for your continued support to do so.

TRIAD dinner honors graduates, seniors

Douglas County Nevada TRIAD held its annual senior educational seminar and Christmas dinner for graduates of the Sheriff's Senior Law Enforcement Academy and patrons from the Douglas County Senior Center at the Carson Valley United Methodist Church in Gardnerville on Dec. 13.

The venue, table decorations, presentations, menu and door prizes were all excellent. There were approximately 120 attendees at this event.

Sheriff Ron Pierini and TRIAD President Travis Lee were the masters of ceremonies. Sheriff's Department Captain Dan Britton made a very interesting presentation on "Active Shooters and the IHOP Incident." He also included information on how to avoid and be protected from these horrific incidents.

The Sheriff's Explorer Post 2105 presented the flag of our country and helped TRIAD set the tables, serve the dinner and clean up following the meal. The dinner, which was delicious, was prepared by Erik Buehrle and his crew from the Douglas County Jail kitchen. This dinner was a good holiday season event.

Thanks to community, mentors, youth celebrate holidays

The Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada Mentor Center wishes to thank some very special people.

For 11 years, the staff of Wells Fargo Bank has invited youth and mentors to a party. More than 80 people filled Wells Fargo East Carson Branch to celebrate the holidays with food, crafts and a visit from Santa Claus.

Huge thanks to Michaela Marazzo, Service Manager, Laura Wulff, Store Manager, and Lisa Sturgiss, Vice President, Capitol District, for organizing the party and helping Santa shop for presents. John Hurzel of A Catered Affaire generously provided a delicious dinner buffet. Kathy Loomis & Starbucks on Highway 50 provided hot chocolate and coffee.

Because Father Chuck Durante and Sister Marie McGloin of St. Teresa of Avila Catholic Community share the message of good will, an anonymous family made a difference in the lives of nine children and their single moms this Christmas. The ripple effect will last generations as they all pledge to pay it forward.

The stylists at Bella Salon, owned by Janette Bonaldi, chose to celebrate their holidays by providing beautifully wrapped and specially chosen gifts for two of our youth being raised by their grandmother and their infant cousin. Grandma received gifts as well!

None of these youth and their families asked for anything, and yet lives were touched by the generosity of others. The citizens of Carson City should be proud that we have such giving and caring people in our community and in our places of business and faith.
