Choose Life Coalition opposes a personhood amendment

Saying it would turn all abortion issues over to "pro-abortion courts," Nevada's Choose Life Coalition Thursday came out against the so-called personhood amendment.

The amendment would define life as beginning at conception and ban any activities that would end that life. Opponents have said the amendment would even ban the pill and other similar forms of contraception as well as all abortions even in pregnancies caused by rape or incest.

In a statement issued by Eagle Forum President Janine Hansen, the coalition said the personhood initiative petition was filed with good intent but "will not protect the unborn or stop abortion."

"This amendment will harm the pro-life movement by giving pro-abortion courts more power to decide all matters relating to abortion, such as parental notification, informed consent and taxpayer funding of abortion," the statement says.

"These matters should be decided by the elected representatives of the people - state legislatures and Congress - not the unelected courts," he says.

They charged that the initiative "will end up giving unlimited power to the courts to perpetuate and expand the disastrous effects of Roe v. Wade and will interfere further with any legislative efforts to stop abortion."

The statement was signed by Nevada Life, Nevada Eagle Forum, Nevada Right to Life, the Independent American Party and Nevada Families Association.
