Hank Monk: Had an offer of $20 per month and all expenses paid for one year to exhibit himself in the large Eastern cities as the man of Horace Greely [sic] fame but declined. Says he has not seen a place larger than Virginia City in more than 20 years.

120 YEARS AGO

Bituminous rock: A very large ledge was discovered just outside the city limits of Los Angeles big enough to pave every street in 36 square miles of Los Angeles City. Near this ledge was a deposit of brea, amounting to over 300 tons. In blasting the brea a spring of petroleum was discovered which has been flowing steadily.

70 YEARS AGO

Advertisement: "War needs money - YOURS! This war calls for every ounce of energy, every dime and dollar we can muster for ships - and planes and guns. Hit the enemy with a $25 Bond. Help to blow him sky-high with a $100 bond or $1,000 bond."

50 YEARS AGO

Carson High School's freshman team won its first game of the season against South Tahoe 43-27. Coach Roy Kidder's Carson team had a close battle for the Carson frosh, Howard Ingersoll led the score with 17 points. Moose Geerdes followed with 10 counters, while Bob Shriver was credited with a good floor game.

30 YEARS AGO

Barbara Vucanovich will announce her run for the northern Nevada Congressional seat. Vucanovich was a long-time aide to Sen. Paul Laxalt and worked in Laxalt campaigns in northern Nevada as he ran for lieutenant governor.

10 YEARS AGO

Patience will be at a premium for millions of Americans who fly, as luggage is scrutinized more closely for explosives. Airlines are advising customers to arrive at least two hours prior to flights.
