Empire students reaching for stars

Empire Elementary School's Reaching for the Stars concert raised $445 toward sending two students and a teacher to attend this year's Space Camp at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center in Huntington, Ala.

"At Empire Elementary School, we believe that by providing our students unique opportunities in science, technology, engineering, arts, and math that our students gain knowledge that will help them throughout their education," said music teacher Christina Bourne, who organized the concert and was selected to attend the camp this year.

"In addition, opportunities such as attending Space Camp may spark an interest in making space and aviation a career goal."

Attending the camp became an annual tradition for the school after technology teacher LeAnn Morris went in 2008 as the Nevada Teacher of the Year.

Students Camille Swanson, 10, and Chloe Roman, 9, were selected as this year's representatives from the school to attend the camp.

Additional fundraisers also are planned to continue the program.

The public is welcome to attend these events. Donations may also be made by making checks out to Empire Elementary School. Call 283-1100 for moreinformation.
