JOIN offers free employment prep workshops

Carson City JOIN will offer four classes on life skills and employment preparation beginning today and running through Thursday.

There will be one class a day and each will run from 8:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. at the JOIN offices, 1925 N. Carson St.

Day one will focus on life skills; day two is how to apply marketing principles when selling your abilities and experience to an employer; day three on resume building; and day four on interview skills.

Superintendent to deliver state of district address

Richard Stokes, superintendent of the Carson City School District, will give an overview of the state of the district at tonight's school board meeting.

He will present information for the district's accountability report as well a compare student performance to the statewide average.

Stokes will report the results of the federal No Child Left Behind mandate and give a briefing of budget numbers and enrollment trends.

"We hope to show that, as a district, we're moving in a good direction," he said.

The meeting is 7 p.m. today at the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William St.

Middle school dance coming Friday

Partnership Carson City's youth team, Yield, is hosting the Icebox Dance - where it is cool to be sober - 6:30-9:30 p.m. Friday at the Carson City Community Center.

The dance was created to youth in sixth to ninth grades a place to hang out, dance, play arcade games, jump in a photo booth and win prizes without the pressure of alcohol and other drugs.

The dance also includes a pizza, hot dogs, smoothies and other drinks for $1. The arcade room, which will include Just Dance III on Wii, is provided for free by High Sierra Amusement.

It is open to 200 youth and with a ticket price of $6. Tickets are sold at Eagle Valley Middle School and Carson High School during lunch hour. Other local and private schools may purchase tickets by calling Partnership Carson City at 841-4730 or stopping by the office at 1711 N. Roop St.

The Icebox is sponsored by the Carson City Community Center in collaboration with Partnership Carson City.

Diego's Umbrella coming to CVIC

The Carson Valley Arts Council is coming off a sold out show with Big Brother & Holding Company and will continue the 2nd Friday Concert Series with Latin, gypsy, rock band Diego's Umbrella in the CVIC Hall 7 p.m. Feb. 10.

Tickets are $10 in advance or $15 the day of show.

Diego's Umbrella are San Francisco's ambassadors of gypsy rock. The band's entertainment style combines a mix of Eastern European tradition, pop sensibility and punk rock energy.

Tickets for the CVAC concert series may be purchased online at www.cvartscouncil.com, by phone, or at the door. The evening will begin with a wine reception hosted by Tahoe Ridge Winery, Marketplace, and Bistro at 6 p.m., followed by the concert at 7 p.m.
