The Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company opens its 2012 season with a high-energy Broadway revue, "Opening Night Spectacular." From the dazzle of "Chicago" and the pounding excitement of "In the Heights" to the stirring rhythms of "Rent" and the enchantment of "The Lion King," audiences will be treated to a cook's tour of more than a dozen shows now featured on Broadway and in national tours. Spring Art Exhibits Debut at WNC Galleries
Western Nevada College art galleries present two new exhibits at the Carson City campus, beginning Monday, Feb. 6. The shows portray elements of landscape and nature through photography, mixed media and prints.
Desire and The Landscape
In the Main Gallery, Desire and The Landscape by California artist Sarah Whorf melds elements of marine and California landscape with everyday symbols and narrative. The resulting series of prints bears the artist's interpretation of the land and sea.
Whorf, an associate professor of art at Humboldt State University, describes her work as a portrayal of "ideas about creating balance and survival strategies in landscapes that we have manipulated as a result of our desires."
She says, "I use abstracted forms of objects such as hooks and lures, warships and sailboats, candelabras and windmills to symbolize desire and attraction, military might and recreational sailing, and old and new forms of light and energy creation."
In conjunction with the exhibit, Whorf will offer a one-day reduction linocut workshop on Friday, March 9, 9 a.m.- 5 p.m. The workshop is open to the public; registration is required. Cost is $25, and includes all materials. Information/ registration: 445-4294.
The Natural World in Digital Prints
In the Atrium Gallery, photographer and mixed media artist Susan Kotler will present Beyond the Image - The Natural World in Mixed Media Digital Prints. The exhibit features photographic images and scanned textures printed on translucent or textured substrates.
Kotler says the process creates a luminous effect on the images that echoes the shifts in light and perception occurring in the natural world. Prints are displayed without glass or are hung away from the wall to allow for a more direct experience of the artwork.
The public is invited to meet the artists during a free reception on Thursday, March 8, 5-6:30 p.m. in the galleries. They are located in the Bristlecone Building at the Carson City campus. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m.- 9 p.m., and Saturday, 8 a.m.- 5 p.m., excluding holidays. Admission is free.
Latino Parenting Workshops happening in February
WNC presents a series of free evening workshops for Latino parents on Wednesdays and Thursdays in February, 5-8 p.m., at Empire Elementary School, 1260 Monte Rosa Drive.
Workshops will begin with an orientation on Wednesday and will help parents understand the importance of supporting educational development and opportunities for their children. Topics will vary weekly and include self-development, committing to life's opportunities, improving parent/child relationships, the importance of education and more.
