When Nevada's Capitol building was completed in 1871, the edifice was more than 100 feet tall and stood in stark contrast to the squat businesses along Carson City's dusty main street.
Around that time, a horticulturalist from Illinois, George Ferris Sr., was instrumental in securing a pallet of trees for the grounds of the Capitol, and some of these trees still stand more than a century later.
On Saturday, Tom Henderson, founder of Healthy Trees, will lead a walking tour of these trees. The tour will begin at 10 a.m.
The purpose of the tree walk is to help participants identify trees by their features and select appropriate trees for planting.
Those joining the tree tour should meet in front of the west Capitol steps and plan to walk in the arboretum for about an hour.
