Cooler temperatures, gusty winds a reminder that it still is spring

Don't put away your jackets just yet.

An "unusual" weather system is going to drop temperatures to around freezing by tonight, according to Meteorologist Rhett Milne from the National Weather Service in Reno.

Milne said gusty winds - up to 55 mph in Carson City on Monday - were going to remain today and keep the temperature around 55 degrees, about 25 degrees below normal.

He said there is a freeze warning for tonight into Wednesday.

Milne said Monday's system was unusual because it caused a "temperature gradient" that had temperatures ranging from 90 degrees in Lovelock, just 110 miles northeast of Carson, to 60 in Carson City.

He said the gradient produced high winds and isolated showers.

"But we will start to warm up gradually Wednesday into Thursday," Milne said. He said the average high for this time of year is 80 degrees. Wednesday temperatures are supposed to climb to near 70, before climbing back to normal on Thursday.

The high winds kept Carson City Public Work crews busy removing fallen trees from roadways Monday afternoon. Most of the downed trees were reported near downtown Carson City.

Milne said the system produced was expected to produce about a tenth of an inch of rain.
