Ameristar Casinos' $7 million renovation of the Granite Range portion of Cactus Petes Casino in Jackpot will bring all of the property's lodging up to date, says Kris Ann Brown, public relations manager for Cactus Petes.
The hotel casino is along Highway 93 just south of the Idaho border and 68 miles north of Wells.
Beniton Construction of Meridian, Idaho, began work on the three-story, 89-room Granite Range section of the property on April 2.
The construction company expects to complete renovation of 79 standard rooms by late June and 10 additional suites by the middle of July.
The remodel includes a complete overhaul of the Granite Range portion of the property, which was built in 1982 and had received various small-scale upgrades over the years, Brown says. Rooms will include new king- or queen-sized beds and bedding, granite vanities, 46-inch flat-screen televisions, refrigerators and other furnishings and amenities.
Construction costs are roughly $4.6 million, with the total project cost running about $7 million, Brown says.
The 10-story Diamond Peak tower at Cactus Petes, completed in 1991, has an additional 207 rooms that were remodeled in 2007.
"This (current) remodel definitely is going to be consistent with the high level of quality and service that Cactus Petes is known for, and our guests will love it," Brown says.
Cactus Petes was built in 1956 after Idaho banned all forms of casino gambling and gaming operators moved their slot operations just south of the state's border with Nevada.
Publicly held Ameristar Casinos said its Jackpot properties Cactus Petes and The Horseshu Hotel and Casino on the other side of Highway 93 earned $3.3 million on revenues of $14.75 million in the first quarter of this year.
That compares with earnings of $3.65 million and revenues of $15 million in the same quarter a year earlier.
The properties draw largely from Twin Falls, Idaho, which is 45 miles north, and Boise, which is 150 miles distant. Cactus Petes and the Horseshu have about a 53 percent share of the slots market in Jackpot, the home of five casino operations, Ameristar has said in SEC filings.
(Ameristar also owns 288 housing units in Jackpot to support its hotel and casino operations.)
Ameristar Casinos, founded in 1993 by Craig Neilsen and headquartered at Las Vegas, operates seven other casino hotel properties throughout the country.
