Capital City Arts present Josh Galarza on Monday

The Nevada Touring Initiative offers many cultural, literary options to communities, one of which is the Tumblewords Program. Tumblewords enables writers to be "in residence" in the community for a day, so novelists and personal essayists such as Josh Galarza can interact with aspiring wordsmiths and interested readers. Mr. Galarza brings his impressive background and credentials - president of Lone Mountain Writers, teacher at Minden Montessori School, tutor of English at Western Nevada College and author of four curriculum manuals in use throughout the world - to the library Monday. A Fiction-Essay Writing Workshop begins at 4 p.m. in the auditorium and is followed by a 7 p.m. reading.

Improve language skills Wednesday

Vamos a Platicar provides engaging conversations among speakers of English and Spanish and gives attendees a relaxed, informal venue to improve language skills, meet interesting people and enhance cultural understanding. The program begins at 6 p.m. Wednesday in the auditorium.

Explore Latvia @ Your Library

Latvia, a small country in the Baltic region of Northern Europe bordered by Estonia, Lithuania, Belarus and Russia, is the topic of this month's Explore the World @ Your Library. Well-known educator and Nevada Appeal contributor Ursula Carlson will present her recollections and impressions of Latvia at 6 p.m. Thursday in the auditorium.

BookMasters meets March 13

Toastmasters Book Club meets at 6 p.m. Tuesday, March 13. This group continues to choose eclectic, classic and often unique novels, and it is always welcoming to new members. The club meets regularly on the second and fourth Tuesday of the month.

Sierra publishers & writers group and history research group

Those interested in writing and research are indeed lucky this month, due to two programs conducted by Sue Ballew. Ballew and her brother, Trent Dolan, are well-known authors, historians and columnists in the area. They have compiled "Early Carson City: Postcards of America," which chronicles the early days of Nevada's state capital and contains pictures from private collections as well as the Carson City Historical Society. "Past Pages," a daily column in the Nevada Appeal that was started in 1947 by their father, historian Bill Dolan, showcases Carson City history over the last 160 years. Beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, March 17, Ballew will conduct the History Research Group. The second activity, the Sierra Publishers & Writers Group, will commence at 2 p.m. on the same day.

The library display cases this month are provided by the Clear Creek Watershed Council and the Carson Valley Quilt Guild.
