A professional mesmerizer found great difficulty persuading anyone to come on stage to what was thought a glass of water. It was alternately brandy, whiskey and champagne. Once discovered what was in the glass, thirty-seven men were on the platform - to be mesmerized.

120 YEARS AGO

Dog named Jack: Cooney Paul, the railroad engineer on the local train, is the proud owner of a shepherd dog named Jack, who makes his home throughout the train, but prefers the pilot position. Conductor Bray is teaching him how to manipulate Armstrong's brake and intends to make him bark the stations as well as any other brakeman on the line.

70 YEARS AGO

Actress Veronica Lake placed among her souvenirs, the original drawing of "Cherry Blossom," the fictitious character created by Al Capp in his comic strip, "Li'l Abner." Miss Lake, whose hair covers one eye, was Capp's inspiration for "Cherry Blossom."

50 YEARS AGO

President Kennedy will inform the world that the United States must resume atmospheric nuclear tests because of the Russian test series and the absence of an effective test ban.

30 YEARS AGO

Draft: A few hundred draft-age Nevadans have failed to register for the military draft. About 600 youth have registered in the state. Those who have not will be prosecuted by the U.S. Attorney.

10 YEARS AGO

The Carson Station hotel and casino is expanding to Carson Street and increasing their slots by 80. The casino was built in 1972 and has been remodeled once. Soon to be 6,000 square feet.
