Thumb: In China, the Celestial vagabonds are not photographed, but their thumbs are smeared with lamp-black and pressed down upon a piece of paper. It creates a rude impression which is kept in the police records. A face may be altered, but a thumb never changes.

Betsy Ross: A Quakeress, Betsy Ross, made the first flag of stars and stripes used in the United States Army. She did the work in a little brick house on Arch Street, Philadelphia. There is now talk of moving it to Chicago for the World's Fair.

Scrap: Over a period of years great quantities of iron and steel scrap were bought in the U. S. for Japan furnishing them with the material for building ships, guns, and planes - now used for war purposes against the United States.

Alma Catherine Darensbug became the capital city's 26th Miss Carson City and captured the talent award with her jazz routine.
