David Bruce Small, former Carson City district attorney and longtime Nevada Day Parade announcer, died Saturday in Reno after a long battle with lung disease. He was 71.
In addition to serving as DA, Small had been a member of the Republican Central Committee and served several years on the board of Carson Tahoe Hospital. He was a member of the Tailhook Association, and a lifetime member of VFW. He was born April 11, 1940, in Detroit, and had been a 40-year resident of Carson City at the time of his death.
Small joined the Navy at age 20 and earned his aviator's "wings of gold" in 1963. He flew 132 combat missions in the Vietnam War and won numerous awards and commendations, including two Navy combat 'V' commendations and 13 air medals. After his service, he attended college and law school, then settled in Nevada.
When his children were young he volunteered as chaperone for the Junior Ski program, and also was involved with Boy Scouts, Indian Guides, Indian Princesses, youth baseball and soccer. He also loved football and was a high school football referee for over 20 years.
He is survived by his wife, Sandra Shaw Small; his son, Navy Cmdr. Jason E. Small (Megan) of Connecticut; his daughter, Kerry L. Small of Reno; sister Susan E. Durham (Dr. C.T.) of Asheville, N.C.; stepsons Matthew Baker (Rachel) of Carson City, Mark Baker (Elaine) of Mount Pleasant, Tenn.; stepdaughter Monica Baker (Dennie) of Carson City; granddaughters Ashlynd, Kiera, and Addisyn Baker; grandsons Charlie Small and Conner Baker; and several nieces and nephews.
A "celebration of life" is planned; details are pending.
