Moody Column: Basketball camp offers sage instruction

John Paulson and Doug Whisler coached many of the present-day Carson High basketball players when they were at Carson Middle School.

The two veteran coaches will combine their knowledge to conduct a basketball camp for boys and girls entering grades 4 through 9 June 4-7 at Carson Middle School.

Players will receive instruction in stations on ballhandling, rebounding, defense, post moves, shooting, and team motion offense.

And, to keep things interesting, each player will be placed on a team where they will participate in two games each day of camp.

The girls session goes from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m., while the boys session goes from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m.

The tuition is $100 per player.

Tutition is $100, and brochures are available at CMS and most elementary schools. For more information, contact coach Whisler at 775-530-0059 or Paulson at 775-720-9747.

My good friend Jamie Klund, who works for Cabela's, sent information on some backpacking classes that the store is holding in June.

Cabela's has a detailed backpacking series geared toward extended backcountry trips beginning June 2nd, and continuing June 16 and 23.

The classes will be taught by one of Cabela's veteran hikers. The series will be based around and through hiking the John Muir trail, generally regarded as the premier hiking trail in the United States.

In the three sessions, there will be talks on planning gear and routes to permit issues, food planning and getting your mind and body ready for the trip.

Several campgrounds, parks and public land agencies will be on had to provide information and meet with folks and various vendors will be in the store to provide demonstrations and product information, as well.

For more information call Klund at 775-829-4128 or reach him via e-mail at james.klund@cabelas.com.

This weekend was the final weekend of the 2011-12 high school sports season, and I'd like to thank the many athletes and coaches in our circulation area for their cooperation and time. I may not tell you enough, but it's always appreciated.
