Obituary: Ernest Goehrig

Former Carson City resident, Ernest Goehrig, 84, died May 14, 2012, at his home in Boulder, CO.

Ernest was born November 1, 1927 in Freiburg, Germany. He learned his trade as a chef in Germany and worked in several restaurants there before immigrating to the U.S. in 1951.

Ernest's first job in the U.S. was as a baker at his uncle's bakeshop in Jersey City, NJ. Baking became his ultimate calling in life. He made beautiful wedding cakes and delicious German tortes, to mention only a few of his specialties.

In 1958 Ernest and his wife Anneliese opened Goehrig's Bakery in Flemington, NJ . They owned and operated it for over twenty years. Ernest spent the remainder of his career baking part time at the Canterbury Corner tearoom in Flemington, NJ, and full time at Princeton University in Princeton, NJ.

In 1993 Ernest and Anneliese retired to Carson City, Nevada. Both were members of St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church. Ernest was also an active and honored member of the Carson City Elks.

Ernst made frequent generous donations of baked goods to various charities in Carson City, including the Carson Tahoe Cancer Center and the Carson City Senior Citizen Center. For several years he hosted and prepared an annual Oktoberfest dinner at the Elks and then at St. Paul's Lutheran Family Church.

Ernest moved in 2010 to Boulder, CO, to be closer to his family.

He is survived by his son, Peter Goehrig; daughter-in-law, Barbara Goehrig; three granddaughters, Melissa Escalante, Christina Kornreich and Stephanie Kassels; and four great-grandsons.

Ernest was preceded in death by his wife, Anneliese, in 2001.
