130 YEARS AGO

FIRE! George Kitzmeyer loses his building and has no insurance. Fire was discovered in the rear of Barclays fruit and confectionery store. Every man and boy who could find standing room piled in and grabbed something to carry across the street and place on the Capitol sidewalk, intentions were good but heaps of popcorn and candy filled in the street as carriers tumbled and sprawled in their hurry to do their best. The side wall of John Fox's building received full force. Water streams were turned into the fire and the old Curry pump was manned by willing hands. Even Dick Bender grabbed the pump and started a snake dance in his desire to stand in. No cause known for the fire.

Diphtheria: A malignant type has appeared in this city and parents should be warned against exposing their children to this dreadful disease.

Automobile quota: The regional office of price administration has announced that Nevada's June quota of new automobiles that may be sold will be 40 same as for the month of May.

Employment up: Governor Grant Sawyer announced new records for employment which fell from 6.6 to 5.1 percent, lowest for Nevada since October 1961.

30 YEARS AGO

Cost of driving: The American consumer will pay 23.8 cents a mile to operate an intermediate sized, 21.4 for a compact, 18.9 for subcompact and 33.2 cents for a van (120,000 miles/12 months). The average age of an American car 6.6 years.

10 YEARS AGO

Photo caption: Two dozen students from St. Teresa School show their donations for a baby shower for expectant mothers. The items and $300 will be distributed through the Carson City Community Pregnancy Center.
