Advocates to shed light on domestic violence

Using glow sticks and other beacons, Advocates to End Domestic Violence will illuminate the path during its first Light The Night Walk and Run.

But it's about more than lighting the race, said organizer Traci Trenoweth.

"October is Domestic Violence Awareness month, and we want to shed light on domestic violence and sexual assault," she said. "We want to bring awareness to our community. What better way to do it than while having a little fun and raising some funds for our shelter."

The 5K and 10K timed run will be 6 p.m. Oct. 20 in Riverview Park. There will be music and refreshments available. Participants will receive a T-shirt and a glow stick.

"It's going to be a really fun event," Trenoweth said.

She said it will be an opportunity to spotlight the work of Advocates to End Domestic Violence.

"Our agency is here to help," she said. "We are the largest shelter in Northern Nevada."

In addition to providing shelter to the abused, she said, they also work with victims of sexual assault. Sexual assault victims are assigned advocates who accompany them throughout the entire process, from reporting the crime to any medical exams then through court proceedings.

"We want to bring light to (the work) Advocates does," Trenoweth said.

It is also symbolic, she said, to hold the run in darkness.

"We're lighting the night," she said. "Taking it back so it's not so scary."
