Pot Rod outhouse bests the rest in VC

Pot Rod emerged victorious in the modern outhouse division of Virginia City's C Street competition Saturday and Sunday, staking claim to the mining and tourist town's top tongue-in-cheek title.

The Pot Rod team topped the Commando Commode entry to win the division and get fastest privy honors in the World Championship Outhouse Races, an autumnal rite of anti-puritan passage.

The title in the classic division, which includes heavier entries, was called The Haunted Outhouse.

"The weather was perfect," said Deny Dotson, tourism director for Storey County and Virginia City, adding that past years have bought snow on occasion and fewer entries.

"People came dressed up in costumes and were having a great time," he said.

This ritual, which surpasses many another mania for scatology and ribaldry in motion, included 20 other entries that bore facetious names.

Among them was The Flapper Crapper, which won the informal applause meter award after an opening parade of all competitors on Virginia City's crowded main drag.

Each entry must weigh at least 200 pounds and have three team members, one sitting on the "throne" and steering as two others push.

The races and parade were accompanied by a wine walk.
