This continues RSVP’s regular Sunday column of outstanding volunteer opportunities. Be sure to look it over and see what you would like to do to add some extra joy to your life by helping others.• Northern Nevada Railway Foundation needs volunteers to help sell beverages at its booth during the RSVP Nevada Day Fair on Oct. 25-28. This is a fundraiser for both the RR and CHS.• The Legislative Counsel Bureau needs volunteers as tour guides for the 77th Session (February through June 2013). Call Carol at RSVP for job description and details. Do not call LCB.• RSVP is looking for volunteers to provide seniors transportation to medical treatments, grocery stops, pickup prescriptions, etc. RSVP has its own vans. Volunteers 55-years and older receive mileage reimbursement if they prefer to use their own vehicle. This opportunity is very flexible — you can drive as much or as little as suits your schedule. Drivers are especially needed in the Virginia City/Highlands area.• RSVP is looking for special people residing in the Virginia City/Highlands area to provide breaks for caregivers providing 24/7 care to loved ones at home. This position has a small stipend and mileage reimbursement associated with it — please call us to learn more.• The SPCA is seeking caring volunteers who can provide temporary foster care for cats and/or kittens that are not quite ready for adoption. They also need help with special events to raise money for this all-volunteer program. Some experience with animals is helpful.• Silver State Charter School is seeking math tutors to work with kids who need extra help in pre-algebra, algebra and simple geometry. Must have patience and basic skills in high-school-level algebra and simple geometry.• Mothers Against Drunk Driving is seeking volunteers to fill its court-monitoring, victim impact panel speaker and victim advocate positions. Nevada MADD volunteer orientation and online training will be provided. Computer access and experience required.• Carson City Literacy needs volunteers to teach people of all ages to read. One-year commitment with two hours per week required. Training will be provided.• Are you an animal lover? Carson City Animal Shelter needs volunteers to walk dogs and socialize with cats. Provide these little creatures with some loving attention.• ComputerCorps needs technical, administrative and facilities volunteers to help with its “Every Home ‘A’ Classroom” Program, which is administered through the individual schools. Families of school-aged children who can’t afford a computer system can qualify for a free one. Volunteers receive mileage reimbursement, snacks and lunch. • Western Nevada College needs ushers and people who sew to assist with the costumes for Western Nevada Musical Theatre Company’s productions. Volunteers will receive free refreshments and a show souvenir, and are allowed to watch performances for free. • Northern Nevada Correctional Center’s Trading Post needs volunteers to help with sales, reporting and merchandising in its retail store environment. The Trading Post is located on East Snyder Avenue.• Like to see great shows for free? The Carson City Parks and Recreation Department is training ushers for its Community Center Theater productions. Light and sound technicians are needed, as well as volunteers for custodial and maintenance work and daytime building monitoring.All volunteers receive orientation and training.
