Occupy Carson celebrates first anniversary of movement

Like similar groups across the nation, Occupy Carson City members demonstrated Monday in recognition of the one year anniversary of the movement's founding.

About a dozen of the 160 members turned out drawing numerous honks and waves from drivers on Carson Street in front of the Legislature.

"Today was just to show solidarity," said group organizer Janette Dean.

At the same time, organizers of the Constitution Walk program were set up all around the Legislature and Capitol to teach elementary school children about the U.S. Constitution.

That event was organized by Project Americans Coming Together and drew more than 400 fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders who went through 12 different stations designed to help them better understand and appreciate the Constitution.

"Because we were exercising our freedom of speech rights, they got to see the Constitution in action," Dean said.

Dean said Occupy Carson now has more than 500 signatures from supporters asking the Board of Supervisors to pass a resolution stating that the Supreme Court's Citizens United decision - opening the gates to corporate political contributions - is bad for democracy.
