Get Healthy: Senior Center meets needs

This column appears in the Nevada Appeal Wednesday health pages. It addresses topics related to the health of our community. In honor of Senior Center Month, Carson City Health and Human Services would like to extend a special “Thank You” to our neighbor and community partner, the Carson City Senior Center, for all the work they do. Seniors are an important part of our community, and the activities and services that the senior center provides can help older citizens feel like they have a place to belong and meet for fun and friendship. The mission of the Carson City Senior Center is to enhance the quality of life and autonomy of individuals over age 60 through a broad range of services and support, including nutrition, activities, information and referral, education, and opportunity for peer interaction, with concern for mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Through programs like Meals on Wheels, fitness classes, and social activities, the senior center is meeting the health and well-being needs of older adults in our community. The Senior Center’s Beverly Street location, next door to the health department, makes it easy for health department staff to provide outreach to seniors by collaborating with the senior center to organize special events like vaccination days and seminars on important health topics, such as smoking cessation and health care advocacy. To learn more about services and activities that are happening at the senior center, including classes and the dining room menu, visit www.carson.org and select senior center from the left-hand navigation bar.
