Model aviation group to host 'A Salute to Veterans'

A fundraising event for the Veterans Guest House in Reno, which also will be a tribute to all military veterans, is slated for Carson City on Saturday.

The High Sierra Radio Control Club in Carson City will host the open house and fundraiser, which is billed both as "A Salute to Veterans" and the "2012 Flying High for Veterans" gathering.

The four Northern Nevada radio controlled model aircraft clubs will put on an air show at High Sierra's flying field at the Pony Express Airpark.

The family-friendly event, which begins at 9 a.m. and should last until 2 p.m. The event is free and open to the public.

It will consist of flying demonstrations by scale models of various military and civilian aircraft from all eras in aviation history.

In addition, there will be a championship air race similar to the Reno Air Races put on by pilots flying their custom-built model racing aircraft.

Along with High Sierra RC Club of Carson City, the other clubs involved are the High Desert RC Club of Fernley, the Sierra Sagebrush Flyers of Gardnerville, and the Reno RC Club.

Though there is no admission, voluntary donations will be accepted.

Water and soda will be available for purchase t beneftit the Guest House. Food will be available for purchase.

Organizers said there also will be a raffle.
