Sierra Lutheran to honor former state superintendent of schools

Sierra Lutheran High School will honor the late John R. Gamble, former state superintendent of public instruction, at a special community luncheon 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. Oct. 13 at the SLHS campus, 3601 Romans Road, Carson City.

Gamble, who died earlier this year, served the public school system of Nevada for 31 years as a teacher, principal, state curriculum director and state superintendent. In retirement, he helped start Bethlehem Lutheran School (K-8), where he also volunteered as principal for several years.

Gamble's commitment to public service will be commemorated through the initiation of the John R. Gamble Memorial Luncheon next month. The event also will feature the introduction of the John R. Gamble Medal, a community service award to be given annually to an individual who models Gamble's commitment to public service, as well as the creation of the John R. Gamble Memorial Scholarship.

"Sierra Lutheran High School is honored to be able to partner with the Gamble family to celebrate the legacy of John Gamble," SLHS Executive Director Brian Underwood said.

"John's commitment to service, both in the public and private arenas, has left an indelible impact on the local community, and the state of Nevada, as a whole."

Douglas County District Court Judge David R. Gamble, son of the longtime educator, will be the featured speaker at the inaugural event.

"My father's life was set apart to service," Gamble said.

"Service to his Lord, to his family, and to the education of the young people of the state of Nevada. He had no concept of service to self. He was wholly consumed with the good he could do for others."

Ticket prices for the luncheon are $40 for an individual ticket, $70 per couple, and $300 for a table of 10.

Tickets can be purchased by accessing event information on the school website, www.slhs.com, or by calling the school's front office at 775-267-1921.

Those unable to attend the event but wishing to contribute to the John R. Gamble Memorial Scholarship can make donations through the event RSVP, which is also available on the SLHS website.

All proceeds from the event benefit the Sierra Lutheran High School tuition assistance fund.
