A Carson City partnership tackling problems of at-risk youths was among groups receiving funding from United Way of Northern Nevada and the Sierra, according to the United Way unit.
The funding, announced Monday, included $25,000 for a partnership involving Carson City Community Counseling Center, the Ron Wood Family Resource Center, Partnership Carson City, Families First Drug Court, the Carson City Jail and the Carson City Rural Mental Health Clinic.
The money is to help address “complex conditions that are putting youth at risk in that area, initially identified through poor school attendance and substance abuse,” the Northern Nevada unit’s news release states.
Also announced was a $60,000 amount provided to the Boys & Girls Club Partnership, which includes the Boys & Girls Clubs of Western Nevada in Carson City and the Boys & Girls clubs of Truckee Meadows, Mason Valley, Lake Tahoe, North Lake Tahoe and Elko.
That money is aimed at paying for teaching people ages 10-18 essential work force skills and increased civic engagement while ensuring progress to the next grade level in school.
The Northern Nevada United Way unit announced money for 11 of its “funded partners” and said the determination regarding recipients was based on a strategic and community-based approach.
In making choices, it researched critical needs in its three areas: education, financial stability and health, the Reno-based unit said.
Karen Barsell, CEO and president, explained that community volunteer councils put great emphasis on partnerships and collaborations among the unit’s partner agencies to tackle issues identified by people at the community level.
