Torch run on way to Northern Nevada

For each one of the 123 peace officers killed in the line of duty in Nevada, a leg of the memorial run between Las Vegas and Carson City will be run.

The run started Thursday and will continue to Wednesday afternoon when the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office will take the baton from their office to the county line and pass it to Carson City, running up U.S. Highway 395 North.

The memorial run is in its 14 year, Memorial Historian Frank Adams said. The memorial itself, which will be on the capitol grounds at noon Thursday, will see the name of fallen Carson City Police Officer Vernon Carvin memorialized. Carvin died on Nevada Day in 1949.

Two other peace officers, Lt. Glenn Barnes of the Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Deputy Denny Van Lawrence of the Elko County Sheriff’s Office.

The service will begin with a presentation of colors by the Nevada Law Enforcement Honor Guard and the runner’s baton will be passed to Carvin’s daughter-in-law, Rosylan Carvin.
