The Nevada Appeal’s Silver Dollars & Wooden Nickels feature recognizes achievements from the capital region and, then warranted, points out other acts that missed the mark.
SILVER DOLLAR: We’ve already got a close connection to the cosmos via our Jack C. Davis Observatory. That connection currently runs even deeper. Moon rocks that were carried here via the Apollo 11 and Apollo 17 missions will be displayed through Aug. 11 at the Nevada State Museum, 600 N. Carson St.
WOODEN NICKEL: If you like record-breaking heat, this is more of a silver dollar. More likely, you were ready to stop sweltering last month. There was little relief to be found, as Carson City’s average July temperature of 74.8 degrees broke the record of 74.5 set in 2003 and 2005. Here’s hoping August is a bit more pleasant, despite National Weather Service meteorologist Shane Snyder’s warning Thursday that more above-average temperatures likely are coming.
SILVER DOLLAR: A Carson City man was arrested Thursday for an alleged traffic violation and ended up in much bigger trouble. A Carson City Sheriff’s deputy searched him and reportedly found a small amount of heroin. The full Special Enforcement Team then showed up and searched the man’s SUV, reportedly finding 2.6 pounds of methamphetamine worth an estimated $67,000 on the street. That’s a great deal of meth that won’t end up in our community. Kudos to Sgt. Brian Humphrey and his Special Enforcement Team for their work.
WOODEN NICKEL: State officials have found mosquitoes carrying West Nile virus in Carson City, as well as Douglas and Washoe counties. If you’ve got horses, make sure their vaccinations are up to date.
SILVER DOLLAR: Yesterday’s planned Bark, Whine and Dine fundraiser exclusively benefited the Carson Animal Services Initiative, a nonprofit raising money to build a new shelter in Carson City. It marked a worthy event for a very worthy cause, as the current shelter dates to the 1960s and is outdated.
