The toddler killed in a July 30 crash on U.S. Highway 50 near Cave Rock has been identified as Caroline M. Maxfield, 3, of Centennial, Colo.

Caroline was in a 2008 Chrysler Town & Country van containing a half-dozen people that was hit head-on by a Cadillac SUV. She was taken by Care Flight to Renown Regional Medical Center, where she died.

The Nevada Highway Patrol’s Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the three-vehicle crash, which involved 16 people.

Trooper Chuck Allen said the crash occurred at about 9 p.m. when a westbound black 2011 Cadillac SRX4 driven by Sylvia Hurtado, 31, of South Lake Tahoe crossed the double-yellow line and sideswiped an eastbound black 2008 GMC Yukon driven by Ross W. King, 51, of Centennial. King had seven passengers. The force of the collision caused the Yukon to roll over, injuring every person in the vehicle. Allen said the Cadillac continued west, hitting the front of a red 2008 Chrysler Town & Country van head-on. The Chrysler was driven by 38-year-old Emily Maxfield of Centennial. Maxfield had been following family members and friends who were in the Yukon ahead of her.

Several ambulances and two helicopters were dispatched to the scene for injuries ranging from minor to serious.

The other person airlifted from the scene was Caroline’s grandmother, Martha Kreutz, also from Centennial. She was flown by CALSTAR to Barton Memorial Hospital in South Lake Tahoe. All others were either transported from the scene by ambulance to Renown or drove themselves to Barton Memorial or Renown Regional Medical Center.

All four lanes of the highway were closed in both directions for about 90 minutes.
