Nye as Judge. When James W. Nye was a very young man, he was appointed a Common Pleas Judge in Madison, N.Y. Nye was always a favorite of the old Democratic leaders of the Empire State. Few men surpassed him in public speaking or conversation. Those hearing his speeches during the war need not be reminded.

Spontaneous Combustion. The railroad company’s coal pile, which contains a thousand or more tons, caught fire yesterday from spontaneous combustion. Fires of this character are common in hot weather. They originate near the bottom of the heaps, and an opening has to be made to the fire to put them out. The heat cakes made a cover almost impervious to water. — Silver State.

The Tonopah Bonanza in high glee reports the fact that a number of Goldfield houses are to be removed to Tonopah for rehabilitation. Now comes the Goldfield Tribune which says the shacks are an eyesore, filled with scorpions and are being cleared away.

Tahoe Miss Wins. Up until last week, the boat was just four tons of trouble. Sunday the Tahoe Miss changed from a cranky tub to a front-running thunder boat and won the $25,000 Seattle Seafair Trophy race on Lake Washington.
