With the approaching one-year anniversary of the school shooting in Newton, Conn., St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Carson City is hosting an interfaith prayer service as part of a nationwide vigil.
“It’s to give voice to the loss we’ve experienced in this country,” said the Rev. Jeffry Paul. “It’s just to remember them and to give them a place in our lives.”
It will coincide with the Day of Kindness and vigil being held today at the Washington National Cathedral as a partnership between The Newtown Foundation and Faiths United.
The vigil will honor the memories of the 26 first-graders and adults killed at Sandy Hook Elementary School on Dec. 14, 2012, and the 30,000 other victims of gun violence in the United States this year.
The group also will perform volunteer work and acts of kindness in Washington, D.C.
Paul said the local service will begin 5:30 p.m. today at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 300 S. Division St.
It will begin with a prayer; then participants will light one another’s candles and offer words of peace. It will continue with a series of readings, Psalms and a moment of silence, then conclude with a song.
Members of all faiths are welcome.
