Donations of cash, crossword puzzle books, slipper socks, gloves, hats, scarves, handkerchiefs, lotions, lip balm, calendars, packaged small food items and gift cards to distribute to seniors can be dropped off at Fountainhead Associates, 312 W. Home Instead Senior Care, through its “Be a Santa to a Senior” program, is collecting gifts for seniors who might otherwise spend Christmas alone. Ornaments with the names of seniors and their gift requests are available on Christmas trees at Walmart in Carson City and Gardnerville. Food for Thought, 3246 N. Carson St., Suite 118, will hold a holiday open house and food drive from 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Dec. 12. Items sought include: microwavable soups; individual serving juice boxes; crackers with peanut butter or cheese; plastic fruit cups; plastic vegetables cups; individual cereal bowls; instant oatmeal; granola bars; pre-mixed tuna salad with crackers; and cans or cups of macaroni and cheese, beef ravioli, Spaghetti O’s and Beefaroni. Step 2, a comprehensive substance abuse treatment program that helps women and children suffering from addiction, poverty and domestic violence, seeks donations of women and children’s winter clothing and shoes, microwave ovens, vacuums, bedding, towels, baby blankets, car seats, strollers, pillows, kitchenware, beds, dressers, alarm clocks and telephones for its annual “Step Up the Holidays” drive. FISH seeks donations for Christmas food baskets. The baskets provide meals for three days. To sign up to receive a basket, bring an NV Energy bill to the FISH administrative office, 138 E. Long St., during business hours.

The “Be a Santa to a Veteran” project seeks Walmart gift cards in the amount of $10 enclosed in unsealed Christmas cards with messages to veterans in need. Cards can be dropped off at Charley’s Grilled Subs at the Carson Mall through Dec. 9.

Project Santa Claus seeks volunteers to sort and wrap presents from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dec. 15-19 at the Douglas County Fairgrounds Pavilion Building. To sponsor a child for Christmas, choose a tag — which includes child’s name, age, hobbies, clothes size, and wish list — from any angel tree in Douglas County and return wrapped gifts to the angel tree location by Dec. 16. Save Mart Supermarkets seek cash donations to benefit food banks. Donations of $5, $10, $15 or $20 can be made through Jan. 3 at checkout counters at Save Mart.

Raley’s is holding its 27th annual holiday bag campaign to contribute food to local food banks. Donations can be made through Dec. 31 at checkout counters in all Raley’s or at www.foodforfamilies.org.

The Governor’s Mansion, 606 N. Mountain St., will host a Christmas food drive from 6 to 10 a.m. Dec. 13 for Advocates to End Domestic Violence. The Governor’s Mansion will hold two other food drives on the same day, one from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., and another from 2 to 6 p.m. Monetary donations will also be accepted.

The Toys for Tots hotline will be available for families requesting toys for Christmas from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. weekdays through Dec. 23. Toys for Tots serves families in Carson, Douglas, Storey and Lyon counties. The number is 775-884-8697.
