Stores must collect sales tax, while eStores don’t have to

So Chuck Muth is correct in saying local businesses don’t pay sales tax, the final consumer does. I own “Nevada’s Oldest Thirst Parlor,” the Genoa Bar. So as a small business owner I get the job of collecting sales tax and turning it in every month to the tune of $3-4,000! For my trouble I get a tax reduction of .0025 percent, or around four bucks. This is sent by me to be processed by the Nevada Department of Taxation in Phoenix, Ariz. (yes, that’s right, our taxes and the jobs related to taxation are done in Arizona, but that’s another story).

Anyway, it is an unfair burden on brick and mortar stores to collect county sales tax while national eStores selling in Nevada do not. By the way, I also have an eStore based in Nevada, so guess what ... I collect sales tax on those sales as well.

On the subject of Gov. Sandoval implementing state-run “Nevada Health Link,” I say, “Well done, governor!” While the Feds fumbled the ball, the state did not. I was able to select a plan that saves me $6,000 per year on personal insurance through the Affordable Care Act.
