Of the many pieces of State Prison ingenuity that we have seen from time to time in the shape of cribbage boards, sandstone match-safes, cigar-box picture frames, ships, etc., was a box shown to us yesterday. It is the work of J.C. Chapman, who is serving time for the Verdi car robbery. It is a lady’s work box, handsomely veneered and inlaid and lined inside with blue velvet with a mirror in the lid. It will prove a beautiful and appropriate present.

A public building for Carson. Sen. Fair’s bill to appropriate $100,000 has been referred to the Committee on Public Buildings and Grounds: it is hereby authorized and directed to purchase a site for a suitable building with a fire vault for accommodation of the United States Courts, Post Office and other government offices.

For the past few days, the fire boys have been working on the armory hall getting the place in shape for the big dance on the night of the 31st. Flags and banners reach about the room in all directions with an intermingling of ferns, flowers, and electric lights. Today, 250 pounds of turkey arrived from Gardnerville.

A gala Christmas Eve party was enjoyed by all members of the army Air Force training detachment located in Carson City at the Arlington Hotel. During the Christmas evening entertainment, three telegrams were received by the commanding officer — messages from President Roosevelt, Secretary of War Stinson, and Chief of Staff George C. Marshall.

Carson City’s first Gold Ball Basketball tournament is planned to begin today with 16 teams taking part, according to Joe Moses, city-county recreation director.
