The Nevada Highway Patrol is looking for a suspect in a fatal hit-and-run accident that claimed the life of a Carson City pedestrian.

Trooper Chuck Allen says a 46-year-old Carson City man was struck and killed about 6:30 a.m. when he tried to cross William Street near Mills Park northeast of downtown.

When troopers arrived on scene, along with deputies from Carson City Sheriff's Office and other first responders, they learned a 46-year-old male had been struck by a vehicle and the driver failed to stop to render any aid and fled the scene.

Allen says the vehicle was a silver Toyota 4Runner. It's not clear if the victim was in a crosswalk. The victim's name is being withheld pending notification of next of kin.

A witness to the accident who was driving east on the four-lane roadway described the errant vehicle as an older model gray or silver colored Toyota 4-Runner SUV with a lifted suspension kit, black wheels and tinted windows. The witness told troopers he applied the brakes when he saw the pedestrian attempting to cross the eastbound lanes from the north side of the highway. He further stated the SUV, that was also traveling east, struck the pedestrian in the right lane. The pedestrian initially ended up on the hood of the Toyota before rolling or falling off the vehicle approximately 40 yards east of the area of impact. The driver of the Toyota did not stop and fled the area while the witness remained at the scene until emergency personnel arrived a few minutes later.
