Carson High School grad to serve as usher at inauguration

Carson City residents attending the 57th Inaugural Ceremonies to swear in the President of the United States on Jan. 21 may see a familiar face in the crowd.Angelica Cortez Rangel, a 1998 Carson High graduate, will be among military personnel serving as ushers on the Capitol lawn. A petty officer 1st class in the U.S. Navy Reserves, Rangel now lives in San Francisco but traveled to D.C. for the inauguration.“We’re out here now learning the logistics,” she said. She said she was honored to have been selected for the duty. “It’s a long tradition for the military to usher inaugural events,” she said. “I’m just excited to represent the Navy. And I’m definitely excited to see how it all happens.”Military participation goes back to the inauguration of George Washington, when on April 20, 1789, soldiers, local militias and war veterans escorted the president to his swearing-in, then held in New York City.Rangel said she is also serving as a representative of her hometown. “It’s nice to know that Carson City is on the map,” she said. “We have good people coming out of there.”
