Freezing fog causes 14 wrecks in Reno-Sparks

RENO (AP) - The Nevada Highway Patrol says the freezing fog that blanketed the Reno-Sparks area early Thursday contributed to more than a dozen traffic accidents during the morning commute, including one involving one of their own patrol cars.

NHP responded to 14 crashes between 7:15 and 9:30 a.m., including three with injuries.

In one case, a 66-year-old man was cited for failure to use due care when his Dodge pickup hit a patrol car on the side of the highway attending to another accident near the intersection of I-80 and US 395.

A 21-year patrol veteran was briefly pinned between his cruiser and a concrete wall. He suffered minor injuries but did not require hospitalization.

Most of the wrecks were in low-lying areas near water where the freezing fog iced the roads.
