Australian firm buys ProThera

ProThera Inc., a Reno company that develops and markets probiotic and dietary supplements marketed through healthcare providers, has been acquired by Soho Floris International.

Soho Floris, headquartered at St. Leonards, New South Wales, in Australia, didn’t disclose the terms of the transaction. ProThera was privately held.

Nigel Pollard, chief executive officer of Soho Floris International, said last week that the ProThera headquarters in Reno will serve as a regional hub for all of the company’s product lines.

The Australian company, which has developed markets in Africa and its home country, now looks to expand its reach into the northern hemisphere.

Headquartered in South Meadows, ProThera was founded in 2001 by Dennis Meiss and Janet Ralston. In 2004, ProThera acquired Klaire Labs, a company that specializes in supplements for people with food allergies.

Along with its headquarters, ProThera operates packaging and distribution operations in Reno. A Soho Floris executive said the company looks to expand in northern Nevada. The company currently employs 75 in Reno.
