The Western Nevada College Specialty Crop Institute will offer a lavender workshop from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Aug. 19 at the Carson campus.
The workshop will begin at Campie’s Lavender Patch in Stagecoach, where Mike Van Camp will demonstrate the distillation process for lavender essential oil and hydrosol. Campie’s Lavender Patch produces more than 30 varieties of lavender, focusing on propagation and development of those favorable to Nevada’s climate. The farm also sells several products.
After the tour, participants will meet at the Carson campus for a lecture about the benefits of developing value-added products and identifying the best varieties to grow. Elizabeth Inman of Purple Adobe Lavender Farm in New Mexico will be featured. Inman created a line of bath and body products that are sold by regional retailers, online, at farmers markets and at her farm.
The cost for the workshop is $35 per person by Aug. 12 and $45 per person after that. Lunch will be provided. Registration is required.
The WNC Specialty Crop Institute teaches alternative farming methods for local growers. Funding for this project was provided by the Nevada Department of Agriculture and USDA/AMS through the Specialty Crop Block Grant.
